Meetings and calls
In a call
The call controls, layouts, raising your hand, reactions, hold, the participants list, chat, materials, pop-out and leaving.
The call screen
#- 1. The meeting title, how many people are in it and how long it has run. Hosts can select the title to rename it.
- 2. Layout: Grid, Spotlight or Sidebar, and Hide my video.
- 3. Participants: who is here, waiting or invited.
- 4. Chat: the meeting chat, with an unread count.
- 5. Meeting materials: the agenda and files.
- 6. View meeting details: meeting information and Copy link.
- 7. More: laser pointers, chat notifications, pop out and Report a problem.
- 8. Mute and Camera, with menus to switch devices.
- 9. Share your screen or start a Whiteboard.
- 10. Raise hand, React and Hold.
- 11. Invite people; its panel also has Copy link.
- 12. End call: leave, or end for everyone if you are a host.
Microphone and camera
#Choose Mute or Camera in the call bar, or press M or V. The arrow next to each opens a menu to switch the microphone, speaker or camera during the call. Audio & video settings… in either device menu does the same in a dialog.
While you are muted, hold Space to talk: you are unmuted while you hold it, and muted again when you let go or switch to another window. Space still presses a button or types in a field that has focus. If you talk for a second or so while muted, You're muted appears with Unmute; it shows at most once a minute. Your browser checks the sound level itself; none of it is recorded or sent.
If someone mutes you, you see who did it ("Alex muted you"). A host can also ask you to unmute; you choose whether to. Until you unmute yourself, holding Space and the You're muted reminder stay off.
Layouts
#Grid shows everyone in equal tiles, nine to a page, with Previous page and Next page for more. Spotlight shows one person large. Sidebar shows one person large with the others in a strip.
The large tile goes to, in order: a screen share, someone a host spotlit for everyone, someone you pinned for yourself, then whoever is speaking. To pin someone, open their menu in Participants and choose Pin for me.
Tiles show the person's name, a Guest badge, a muted icon, Hand raised, On hold or Reconnecting…, and an orange outline while they speak.
To stop seeing yourself, choose Hide my video in Layout. Your tile leaves your screen while someone else is in the call; everyone else still sees you. Choose Show my video on the stage, or Hide my video again, to bring it back. In one-to-one calls, and on a phone with one other person, your video sits in a corner: its Hide my video button folds it into Show my video.
Raise your hand
#Choose Raise hand or press H. Hosts get a pop-up and see raised hands in Participants in the order they went up. Choose Lower hand (or press H again) when you are done; hosts can lower hands too. Raise hand isn't available in one-to-one calls.
React during a call
#Choose React in the call bar and pick 👍, 🎉, ❤️, 😂 or 👏. It floats over your tile for a few seconds for everyone in the call, guests included, in meetings and in one-to-one and group calls. Reactions aren't saved, so someone who joins later doesn't see them. On a phone the reactions are at the top of More.
Screen readers announce who reacted, once per person while their reaction shows. If you send many in a row you are asked to slow down, and you can't react while you are on hold.
Put yourself on hold
#Choose Hold to step away without leaving. Your microphone and camera stop, any screen share or whiteboard you started ends, your hand is lowered and your tile says On hold. Choose Resume to come back with your microphone and camera as they were (unless someone muted you meanwhile).
Participants
#Participants lists people Waiting in lobby (if you can let them in), Raised hands (hosts), In this meeting, and Invited · not joined. Right-click a person, or use their ⋮ button, for actions:
- On yourself: mute, camera, raise hand, hold, and for hosts Spotlight for everyone.
- On others: Pin for me, Send message (starts a chat message with @their name), Add to contacts and, when they share, Open screen in new window.
- Hosts and workspace members in the call can Mute participant on someone else. Guests cannot mute others. App participants can unmute themselves; standalone phone callers also have Unmute participant. Only the meeting organizer in the call can use Mute all.
- Hosts get more: see Host controls.
Unanswered invitations appear under Ringing · not answered yet, with Cancel when you can stop them. See Meeting audio by phone for phone invitations and phone mute controls.
Meeting chat
#Choose Chat to open the meeting chat beside the call. Everyone in the call can see its messages, including guests. You can reply, react, mention people, and edit or delete your own messages; hosts can pin. Files can't be sent here.
Guests can use meeting chat only during the call. Members who attended find it in Chat as "Meeting: {title}", where they can start the meeting again, and it is in the call summary. While the panel is closed, new messages show a count and a short preview.
Move and resize panels
#On wide screens (1200 pixels and up) panels dock beside the call. Drag a panel's edge to resize it, drag its header to the other side, or use Panel position for Move to left, Move to right and Stack with. On narrower screens panels open over the call, and on a phone they open full screen. Press Esc to close the focused panel.
Pop out the call
#Press P, or choose Pop out call in More, to keep a small always-on-top window with Mute, camera, Back to call and End call while you work in other apps. This works in Chrome and Edge; Safari shows a plain floating video, and Firefox doesn't support it.
Leave or end the meeting
#Choose End call to leave. Hosts choose between Leave and End for everyone. You can move around the app during a call: a bar says In call with Return to call. Closing or reloading the tab asks you to confirm.
A meeting ends on its own at the plan's meeting length (45 min on Free, 3 h on Starter, 8 h on Business); everyone gets a warning five minutes before. It also ends after five minutes with nobody in it, or when one person has been alone for a few minutes.
After the call
#When you leave, Meeting ended shows the duration, who was there, the whiteboard and the chat, with Rejoin and Back to home, which opens Chat. Rejoin takes you back in, or starts the meeting again if it has ended (see Start a meeting again).
Rate the call quality as Good, Okay or Poor. For Okay or Poor you can say what went wrong (audio, video, screen share, connection or other). Your answer helps us fix problems.
If your connection drops
#If your connection drops, a Reconnecting… banner appears and others see it on your tile. CheapMeet keeps your place for 60 seconds. If you reload the page in that time you see You left the call with Rejoin.
