Group chats

Name a group, add and remove people, choose what history they see, mute, hide and leave.

The Details panel

#

Choose Details in a conversation's header to open its panel on the right. In a group it shows the name, the emoji, the people and notification settings. In a direct message it shows the other person, Block, and notification settings.

Rename a group or set its emoji

#

Anyone in the group can change its Group name (up to 64 characters) and Group emoji in Details. Everyone sees a line such as "Ann renamed the group to Launch". Names with profanity are refused.

Add people

#

In Details, choose Add people, pick people from the workspace, and choose what they can read:

  • Don't include earlier messages: they see what is said from now on. This is the default for a group that already has messages.
  • Include the past few days: they see the last 1 to 365 days (7 by default).
  • Include all chat history: they can read the whole conversation.

Then choose Add. A group can have up to 50 people. Someone who blocked you can't be added by you, unless you are a workspace owner or admin.

Remove someone

#

The group's owner (whoever created it) and workspace owners and admins can remove people. Open the ⋮ menu next to the person, choose Remove from group, and confirm. They lose the conversation and its history right away, and everyone sees that you removed them.

If the owner leaves or is removed, the person who has been in the group longest becomes the owner.

Leave a group

#

In Details, choose Leave group and confirm. It leaves your Chat list and you stop getting its messages. Someone in the group can add you back. A direct message can't be left; hide it instead.

Mute a conversation

#

In Details, choose Mute conversation…, pick For 1 hour, For 8 hours, For 1 week or Until I turn it back on, and choose Mute. New messages no longer make a sound or pop up, but still show as unread.

Mentions still reach you unless you also tick Mute @mentions too. While muted, Details says "Muted until …" with Unmute.
